Mia's Musings
Ms Roberta... GURL I LOVE YOU. This is not a sad post, Ms Roberta lived an extraordinary life and while she passed from a cruel disease, her contributions are not too be forgotten. While I grew up with Roberta, I didnt really step into her web of divine feminity till college. I picked up " I feel like making love" at some used record store ( yes, vinyl) and it was not title song that grabbed me, even though its beautiful it was "early e'very midnight". If you don't know it, it like sensual blanket of intimacy and vulnerability. I listened to it over and over. From there I accumulated quite a collection of Ms. Flack, everyone knows the hits but I love "Reverend Lee", "Don't Make Me Wait Too Long", " In Late December" " You Know What It's Like.. of course "Where Is the Love" .. I could go on and on. I am an artist, and I love artists. I love creativity, I love brillance and Ms Roberta was an artist in the truest sense. She wrote, sang, composed, played piano, arranged and she was an educator. She could play rock, pop, jazz and classical. My belief, to create black excellence you must be procured in a black space, I have yet to be proven wrong. Ms. Roberta entered Howard University at the age of 15.. yes maam 15! She is a Delta and her homie and classmate was no other than genius Donny Hathaway. You have to be in a space where your thoughts are valued and without Howard we would not have the mother goddess that is Roberta. Her musical peeps included Quincy Jones, who named her Baby Lady, Stevie Wonder, Eugene McDaniels, Bob Dylan, of course Donny Hathaway, Luther Vandross, Gwen Guthrie she even co wrote a song with Maya Angelou. Ms Roberta for me defined what it mean to live in your divine feminity, to birth from your vulnerability, your sensuality, from your wombness. Again, no sadness just a thank you for a black beauty Ms Roberta #blackhistory #robertaflack #ifeellikemakinglove #donnyhathway #divinenine #howarduniversity #delta #womenartistis #reverendlee
